LISBURN JUNIOR INVITATIONAL LEAGUE UNDER 16
Venue: Rec, Lisburn
In many ways this match had so much of the story of the season within its orbits. Light and shade, good and evil fought for supremacy within our ranks. Put on those terms it may appear evil won as we lost the game, but in reality confirmation was evident that at the end of the game, and this season,we have come through the swamps, through the mental and physical challenge thrown at us to emerge covered in some gold dust from the PRIDE Production Company.
If Gordon Brown was slow to turn his microphone off we were slow.slooww, slooowwww..... to start.Poor concentration on and off the ball. Distillery, all white were neither Real Madrid or Leeds United but were forcing corners and getting the headers in. For the formation we were playing there were far too many gaps in our own half of the field and sloppy and careless passing and use of the ball was sooner or later going to become a teenage self-harm issue.
Our bankers' attitude of living beyond our means became a full credit crunch issue as another left channel exposure meant a 1-0 deficit. At least it wasn't in the first sixty seconds. The flimsy nature of our challenge was replicated in the match props as the net fill to bits in our goal. The combined DIY efforts of the Distillery /Ards backroom staff provided five minutes of Laurel and Hardy as they put it back together again. So our pride button was flicked ,and when flicked these days, we respond accordingly.
People now looked for the ball, used it quickly with imagination and like Saturday night entertainment, played in a more'Strictly' disciplined fashion with a certain X factor. Oh yes,Ards have got talent. Consternation started to appear in the Distillery rearguard as the blend of our play had them struggling in malt. We'll start with a single. Initial pressure had led to a semi clearance by Distillery but forced back in by ourselves the disorganised defence was all Big Ben needed to strike one. Still a difficult lob whilst staying onside, Hunterforce continued his goal a game ratio. The other incidents worthy of mention in the half constituted an outstanding save from Richard Pollock at full length to turn one away and a chance that Rory Cubbon was unable to keep under the bar.
1-1 half time.Whilst we are now much more Dr.Jekyll, Mr.Hyde refuses to hide permanently. More players are bringing the ball down but it still may as well have a lit fuse attached for too many. Summer homework lads? Another old characteristic from the September Crusaders game resurfaced when a Distillery shot came off the bar; we all waited for the replay as the opposition could not believe our stasis to go ahead 2-1 with the rebound. If you were soldiers lads, you'd be dead with reactions like that.
Now in many cases that would have been it for us and we could have raised a flag to match the opponents' shirts. No more though and immense credit to the team. Paul Kirkwood, after beating three men in his own penalty area unleashed a bending, swerving rocket from his own half into the top corner for an equaliser. Ok, Hardwood,sorry..I jest. But the determination and attitude shown by our Captain to charge at a clearance resulting in it ballooning over their 'keeper was worthy of reward. As she who cannot hit the high notes sings( Dido - you should go to Helen Whitehead for lessons) -
"There will be no white flag above my door,
And I won't put my hands up in surrender"
2-2. It was not to end this way as soon after, a fast break had us a lifeboat short at the back and a shot was hammered in from the edge of the box. At the death Stuart Muldrew got on the end of a Kirky free to head back across goal for returning from injury, Ross Whitehead to head one close but the keeper just made it.
So another performance to enthuse about. Perhaps after Monday a slight dip was inevitable and certainly a few players were not on top form today. But the upward trend continues and the season has ended too early,.....and that, guys and gals as Jimmy Savile would opine,
is a great thing to be able to say. Now then, now then, a word or five hundred on this interesting season.
Let's remember back in August ,with Peter in his hospital bed and whether or not we would have a team or not. A strong September fell away with the autumn leaves as goals became very scarce for us. Confidence and morale became issues and were we saved or not by the nuclear winter break? January's brief window of action saw the encouraging Greenisland and Crusaders games but it was really a false dawn until we hit Italia. This period for me hosted the worst performance of the season in the Lisburn 0-4 defeat.
So despite my post trip hostility to them ,Italy did wonders for us.The trip resulted in such a memorable April for us. Peter's new formation has added benefits but the team spirit is so much improved with the team really working for each other. Approximately 30% of the season's goals have come in the last two weeks. As mentioned various issues still imprison us - bouncing balls, poor starts etc.. but perhaps the Battle of Barbour has shown to ourselves what it takes to prevent late goals. As in every season the technical and physical requirements rise and thus, the mental application necessary to go with that demand. It should be said that by and large, and three 1995 players nothwithstanding, the level of general committment to this has held good.
Never once has the team dissolved into finger pointing or serious back biting which rots cohesive effort. Credit to the old hands of the team here. The lack of this was shown all too clearly on Monday night by Crusaders when their mental strength collapsed against us when things got too difficult for them. But the message stands... no matter how tough things get.. we won't and can't lower standards or aspirations to those who cannot reach and maintain the level required. You reach up to us and we will hold you, but you won't pull us down. This is about obligation to your team mate and the shirt.
In a similar vein, those who have spent much of the season on the sidelines deserve praise....coming on to contribute when called upon and giving it your best for the greater good. The fact that team members who started the season are here at the end of it with its demands upon you, shows you have developed on that front alone. It may have taken to April to hit paydirt but that doesn't matter- you stuck at it until it happened.
The heading issue is so much improved and at this rate we will master the ball from sky to deck as well.Communication is improving but still much to do. Positional awareness and
discipline, as you are fast learning is becoming important at this level, especially with this formation. So many little things but at the end of the day we have a team willing to work hard for one another and most importantly-the shirt.
Man of the Match. Not necessarily today's outright winner but Ben Hunter's goals have been the leading feature of the team in this last few weeks. He deserves recognition for this in as much we now have a set of fangs to provide menace to teams. This makes us a whole new different prospect as a team and let us not forget Ben is still more naturally a left winger playing out of position. Now that he is top goalscorer he must build and use this to further fortify his game, especially in hold up play but that is for another day.
Now taking chances and seeking them out ,rather than waiting for them to happen for him, this change of stance has reaped reward for him and the team.He did not buckle under the pressure of Stuarty pushing him all the way ,and at the same time hopefully appreciates the contribution of Stuart and others to his recent goals.
Team Richard Pollock,Adam Bridgnell(Ross Whitehead),Dillon Crawford, Matthew Robinson, Michael Busby,Paul Kirkwood(Captain),Rory Cubbon,Andy Flack(Glenn Johnston),Stuart Muldrew,Danny Mackey(Gavin Flack), Ben Hunter
Perhaps ,before we sign off and in an effort to delight and offend all, I thought you might like to share in a few ' microphone moments' this week from the stump. Basically these are a few of the exchanges recorded from each party as they called at various Ards Youth houses seeking next Thursday's vote.
"Hello Sir/Madam-this is your local Alliance candidate ,can I count on your vote?"
Ards Youth House-" Yes, now that Clement Freud, sorry ,David Ford is Minister for Justice he should disallow goals scored against Ards Youth in the first or last five minutes. I mean this isn't fair as the boys haven't got into it and are tired at the end. I mean who could disagree with that. Can he be the Minister for Luck and Justice? This is an inclusive policy and must be adopted- you can't discriminate against the unlucky now ,can you?"
" Hello Sir/Madam-this is your local Green Party candidate, can I count on your vote?"
Ards Youth House- " Green Party eh?,since when did Shankill Youth run for office? Can Ards Youth have a candidate? What about that nutter Muldrew?.. he's too much to say for himself."
" Hello Sir/Madam - this is your TUV candidate, .........."
Ards Youth House -" I'm afraid you'll have to talk to the club if you want the name changed back to Ards Rangers"
" Hello Sir/Madam - this is your Sinn Fein candidate, ............."
Ards Youth-" Look, I know we've put loads over the bar and we're very good at it but it doesn't mean they want to play Gaelic."
" Hello Sir/Madam- this is your Conservative and Unionist Candidate..............."
Ards Youth House- " Yes I know they play in Red and Blue but I wouldn't read into it Mr.Nesbitt. I mean you used to work on UTV was it, or was it Youtube , or were you a tube on UTV or... never mind...I'm voting Whitehead....... I don't care if that's in the South -East Antrim constituency"
" Hello Sir/Madam,- this is your SDLP candidate, .........."
Ards Youth House -I think you've got the wrong house here-this is an Ards YOUTH house- the old peoples' home is round the corner there".
I can only suggest that when you tick the candidate of your choice next Thursday in the privacy of your voting booth you can compromise that privacy just a tad. Clear your throat and roar - " Ards Youth, Ards Youth, Come on Ards".
' till next season.
" Warder, isn't it time for my exercise hour?"

FRIENDLY
Last match of the season and ballymoney was our game.
We started the game very brightly with some lovely football through gareth donnan now playing his centre midfield roll.
Chances were created with adam bennett and tristan mccormick coming close but this game was obvious that the ref was going to have a stinker !!!!!!!!! (just the usual from these refs )
15 minutes in and Ballymoneys first break forward and TJ playing right back handled the ball just outside the box and the ballmoney team set the ball up for the free kick when the ref then decided no its not a free kick but a PENALTY ??????????
Much to the discontent of the manager who then was called over to the ref to explain his discontent to which the ref replied its a pen cause i say so ?????
1 nil ballymoney. 5 minutes before the end of the half we snatched 1 back to go in level.
The second half started much the same with ards having all the play and creating chance after chance but to no reward again the ref seamed to be one sided as every free kick was going one way and no deccesion ours. But with matt dornan between the posts he seamed to have everything under control.
15 minutes to go and a well worked corner saw dylan stephensons shot tipped over the bar by the keeper. Again no reward for are great play.
We broke again and a lovely through ball from eddy power saw the ref blow for of side and our manager told the ref that the ballymoney left back was playing everybody on side.
The ref called me on only to issue a straight red card and asked me to leave (do you really know the laws of the game ref or are you just another ref who is there for your 12 pound !!!)
10 seconds remained when ballymoney created the first chance of the second half only to make it count fair play to you`s .
The game ended 1 - 2 but the score should of been out of sight with the amount of chances we created.
Unlucky boys but we played some lovely football today and thats the sign of things to come.
Man of the match Jonny mcdowell superb performance well done. |

LISBURN JUNIOR INVITATIONAL LEAGUE UNDER 16
Venue: Barbour Park, Lisburn
As I drive south to Dublin, the sun lies lower in the west, easing itself to rest on a few cotton ball clouds, still bothering to stay up to this hour. And of course ,there are the shadows, long and thin at this time of evening. The steady hum of the engine does not disturb the peaceful landscape but it is all at odds with the battle just pa ssed. Images of burnt grass, upturned helmets, discarded magazines ,webbing packs and the occasional torn and fragmented red and black shirt of the defeated enemy lie scattered.
For Goose Green-read Barbour Park. Hell's Bells it was too-but not for us.We tolled that bell.
" I'm rolling thunder,fire and rain,I'm coming on like a hurricane,
White light is flashing 'cross the sky,
You're only young but you're gonna die"
The opening lines from that classic album 'Back in Black' feel appropriate. Nightmares now come in red and blue. It's not as if Crusaders hadn't been warned either after our previous two skirmishes.
The backdrop to all this as you know was more scientific and cerebral as we 'hmmmd and haaadd' over this different formation and the improved performances which were now on a higher plateau due to various reasons-post Italy effect, more goals etc.. Sure on Saturday were we not taping an area off and erecting plaques where we had brought the ball down. Seems small beer now. Ye Gods ,I swear after the match I saw the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse stand together in the Barbour Centre Circle, link arms and roar " ARDS YOUTH, ARDS YOUTH, COME ON ARDS!. They then mounted their red and blue silk clad steeds and are still standing at the four corner flags as they look outward and guard Barbour. A huge Ards flag flutters in the centre circle. No doubt a new one for the Lisburn League committee to deal with.
Bill Murray kicked this game off for us-or at least he might well have had. Groundhog Day?
Oh yes-goal again conceded in the first minute as they cut in from the right and we all ball watched allowing a midfielder in unchallenged to score. We were very flat for the first ten minutes and struggled to register. Gradually, though,we dug in as the NCOs got a grip and sorted us out.
A Kirky free kick deep into the angle of the six yard box was well met by Michael Busby, fighting high above the conifers. His striker's space -finding instinct still intact, Stuart Muldrew met the ball to head it perfectly over the advancing 'keeper into the net.For Crusaders it was 'same old same old' again this season. Everyone put a smirk on their face and say after me in a deep and guttural 'Gerry' voice- "They haven't gone away, you know".1-1.
Now that we were breathing unaided the ventilator was taken away and we fenced and parried. A fairly open game ,Richard Pollock beat away a stinger to his left and Ben Hunter tossed a live one in from the left. Some fine team interplay resulted in a loose ball in their six yard box which was just cleared away. Then, as is our wont, Crusaders were allowed to build from the half way line and a crossfield move resulted in another concession just before the ceasefire known as half-time. 1-2.
The boys were complemented on their efforts and told it was all to play for. It was felt that our front of house pace could cause damage if the ball was played quickly over the top in the area just beyond no mans land approaching enemy trenches. Well let's just do that. Stuarty lofted one through and man in form, Ben Hunter, all ice and composure these days put in a strong enough shot which the goalkeeper could not prevent trickling into the corner of the net. This is a shot Ben would have missed earlier in the season. Confidence is a wonderful thing-his fourth goal in twelve days and his third consecutive. Another from the Muldrew/Hunter production company. 2-2.
It was at this point that the frequency was turned up,the ropes tightened and the noise turned white-and we were applying it. Another ball was fed to the terriers and this time Danny Mackey, slaloming through the trees like a scalded bobtail caused overload in the penalty area. PENALTY-spot kick city. Danny was going to bury his own bone. 3-2.
Now who was going to stand up and be counted.? Eleven men true Sir.Backward steps-No.Not me sir-I defy thee. Twenty -five minutes to go-mach 2 and no seatbelt.
From here on in it was somewhere between the Alamo and Ripley in her metalcasing outsuit facing old Alien chops. Crusaders were at us all over. The ball hit our bar and the follow up was blazed over the gaping net-winning lottery ticket blown out the window there.
Another open goal was missed and Richard Pollock dived and contorted to keep his team in it with all types of saves. On the sideline it was all too much for Jeff Flack who dived horizontally into the hedge for relief-these Millar's Forge types! Speaking of which, Helen Whitehead recreated her 90 decibel falsetto from 2006 and John Busby's head visibly vibrated like a tuning fork. A couple of dogs passing by looked up and grinned, pleased someone was on their audible wavelength.
We weren't just riding our luck here- 'Our Luck' was being ridden in Down Royal,Leopardstown and Naas all at the same time. But luck was just part of it. Steadfast and resolute we were still playing football, but together as a team, links in the chain. The opposition couldn't face us down and the Crues slipped out of cruise control as their discipline went to bits. Two sent off, moans and gurns with one tackle pure Fumanchu. They kept cutting us down-we kept getting up. In your face?-hand on their windpipe more like. A magnificent 3-2 win-best of the season.
This was admirable in so many ways.To come back twice and then hold a lead for twenty-five minutes. The journey here into 'extra mile ' territory with no rope around the waist will do wonders for self -belief. And there was no rope in that last twenty-five-did it all yourself boys and did not allow the intimidation to beat you. Credit to the referee who was strong and correct. This performance has been building since Italy and now you have the proof.
You have all taken a major step here lads. Peter justifiably talks about luck and justice being against us. Stand strong and tall together like this lads and you will not need such entities.
Let us remember it was the Cup 2-3 defeat against Crusaders that started the 'Long shadow' story. We went to Italy in t-shirts on myth and legend as we had lost that game.No more - the myth has substance-fill the shirts with pride. For as you walked off the pitch in the early spring sunlight,if you looked carefully, you and your souls were all taller than your shadow.
Man of the Match-Richard Pollock. A stunning save in the first half was the forerunner to a second half in the teeth of the storm.Defended his goal like a demon possessed-full of bravery ,both in a physical and moral sense. He will remember this match-so will we Richard, and your part in it.
Team-Richard Pollock,Adam Bridgnell,Matthew Robinson,Dillon Crawford,Michael Busby,Paul Kirkwood(Captain),Rory Cubbon(Gavin Flack),Andy Flack,Stuart Muldrew,Ben Hunter,Danny Mackey. |

LISBURN JUNIOR INVITATIONAL LEAGUE UNDER 16
Venue: Rec, Lisburn
The closing words on Monday night after an excellent performance v Ballymena were essentially- could the team take off with the gathering storm of promising displays..rooted in we hope and suspect ,the North Italian experience of Jesolo. Take off? Pass me my aviator shades as I look high, arrange the windsock behind the net and that is my handlebar moustache you boundah, not a foreign insect.
The aerial theme is not just analogous. Two headed goals and sit down for this...Ards players pulling the ball down out of the sky. More of this later. On Friday, ITV2 had ‘Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines on the box’-you better believe it-I need to learn to read these subtle signs. What’s on to-morrow?-‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’? Fit the red and blue smoke cannisters to the boots now for Monday night!
So let’s look at today’s mighty effort. If it’s fair to say that this season we haven’t exactly done an ‘Icarus’ by sailing too close to the sun,at the moment we are definitely Mercury rising. This is not a results defined statement. More a case of more players playing better for longer with increased skill levels, fitness, concentration, passing and application. As the year passes from Aries to Taurus there is certainly something more aggressive and resolute in our play and dare I say it- we are even gaining some horns.
Wing Commander Whitehead explained the 3-2 3-2 formation to those absent on Monday night and the battle joined between ourselves and Lurgan at the natural midpoint of Lisburn Rec. This season aside,we have a very good record against them and hopes were high. First to the ball, we were full of hard running and imagination. The midfield was claimed in a single text book manoeuvre and held in a vice like grip which was never released. The teeth arms of the team injected toxic doses and the back three/five/ , five/three snapped at loose enemy elements.
Rory Cubbon, Ben Hunter and Danny Mackey had foraged behind enemy lines and reporting back, encouraged the rest of the battalion to attack the yellow peril in greater strength.Soon after,a goalkeeper’s poor clearance was picked up in midfield, passed to Ben Hunter just outside the penalty area, who steadied himself and picked his spot with enough force and accuracy to beat the keeper with a small deflection. As the Cars said in 1979-“ I guess it’s just what I needed”.
The rest of the half had us pretty well on top with people being defensively and offensively aware with a key moment of the season taking place.Tape the area and put a plaque down. Here, at 9.54am, Michael Busby, son of John, born in the seventh month of 1994 AD, was witnessed taking the ball down instead of the easy option of heading the ball away. As I sit here and watch Butch Cassidy,it was a true Sundance moment,ie.. if you have seen the film it’s when Sundance tells Butch he can’t swim ,then jumps hundreds of feet to the rapids below.
Courage and comfort zones and all that. It was at this point that it was clear that Assistant Manager Muldrew needs the the strength of the tablets increased as he suffered his own very personal, yet public seizure on the sidelines. Sympathetic glances were exchanged and some tried to help but it was clear that this is a battle he must fight on his own. Bridgie started crossing the barrier by heading the howitzers which has now spread throughout the team. Let’s see the rest of you now ,and to be fair another player did try though unsuccessfully to do the same.
The second half continued in much the same way ,determination evident to guard this lead. Ben Hunter put a great cross in and Glenn Johnston was unlucky not to meet it. The pressure was growing on the North Armagh men and a corner was superbly met by Stuart Muldrew’s head, soaring through the stratosphere to get over the ball enough from his position at the penalty area for it to bounce before it crossed the line. 2-0. Their spinal cord broken, Lurgan were now paralyzed by the Ards forward motion.
An Andy Flack free kick was beautifully placed inside the penalty area and Captain Kirk beamed in to glance home ,again from the head to increase the lead. To match the threadbare pitch, Michael Busby laid further waste and picked up just outside the penalty area to perfectly place a delicious shot inside the right hand post for four. This was how it finished and was now our most comprehensive victory of the season.
So in this week of political debate ,our pressing issue is does this 3-2-3-2 suit us? We have had two excellent performances against top and bottom teams on the back of it. Is it because of the formation or because we are playing well? This probably remains to be seen and players’ input is important here – both in how they see it and if they think it works irrespective of result. At the end of all the theory only they can make it work. Players win games..not formations.
Certainly it throws up some positive things. A lot more players are closer together and this means pass breakdown is reduced somewhat. Linked to this the three key senior players, indeed the Holy Trinity of the side,Busby ,Kirkwood and Muldrew are working and thinking more in collective cohesion. In this they become the operational nerve centre of the team and positive things accrue. Defence, general organisation and attacking direction are thus more keenly executed. In essence Stuarty, being the creative hub of the team is released from energy sapping defensive duties to launch attacks and of course, attack is the best form of defence.
Of course the direct debit paid is a narrower defence, but Bridgie and Dillon now have the confidence and footballing maturity to make their own decisions regarding their lateral movement depending on the threat posed. Matthew,as witnessed by Monday night is now well capable of more responsibility. The key of course is Michael and Kirky dropping into the gaps as the aforementioned full backs press the touchline. Bearing in mind we have pace in Danny and Ben this system allows us to soak pressure and counter effectively provided we stay onside which has been rectified from the Shankill match. Ironically, the complexity of the system I think actually makes players more positionally aware..ie...being too comfortable and familiar with 4-4-2 leads to overfamiliarity, leading to casual, leading to carelessness, lack of concentration etc.. Now they are permanently thinking where should I be? We shall see anyway.
So as the airlines argue about compensation those on the sidelines who have suffered throughout the season had their own dose of it with a rich performance. It was pleasing to see the season’s goal tally equal the games played- let’s ensure it is the same at the end of the season. That means two more goals at least.
Man of the Match.Stuart Muldrew. Omnipotent in front of the Omniplex, Stuart put in a fine exhibition of midfield play. A man who understands the spirit of the No.10 shirt he plays up to the standards demanded of it,be it midfield or as a forward. Pretty well involved in all things positive he still put in his fair share of rockblasting to win the ball for himself or the team. Moving play from left to right, from long to short he makes the team play football and forces constructive stuff from those around him.Capped his game with his 21st Youth Football goal against Lurgan –as far as they are concerned a true pain in the net.
Team: Richard Pollock,Adam Bridgnell,Dillon Crawford,Matthew Robinson,Michael Busby, Paul Kirkwood(Captain)Rory Cubbon(Dean Wylie), Andy Flack(Glenn Johnston) Stuart Muldrew,Ben Hunter,Danny Mackey(Gavin Flack).

LISBURN JUNIOR INVITATIONALSHIELD UNDER 17 FINAL
Venue Rushmore, Lisburn
Ards travelled to Rushmore in Lisburn to take on Glenavon in the final of the Lisburn League Under 17 Shield final. Ards began brightly and could have taken the lead as early as the first minute when Mullen powered past the Glenavon defender but his shot was saved by the Goalkeeper. Ards continued to dominate the game being driven on by midfield trio of Mawhinney, Gordon and Fletcher who performed excellently throughout the match. During the first half, Ards created a number of good chances but also defended well to keep a powerful Glenavon attack at bay. At half-time the game remained scoreless.
In the second half, Ards management introduced Patmore and Sullivan for Cunningham and Mahwhinney and the game continued to go Ards way. Midway through the second half, Ards got a free kick just inside the Glenavon half, Sullivan took the resultant free-kick which was flicked on by the excellent Mullen and was drilled home by Gordon who capped a fine performance with a goal. The goal seemed to galvanise Glenavon who rallied to put the Ards goal under intense pressure and Ards required their Goalkeeper and Captain Wallace to produce a fine save. The Ards defence was well marshalled by Neville and Carberry and was withstanding the pressure. Ards had an excellent chance to go further in front when the pacey Cochrane sprinted to the byline leaving defenders in his wake and delivered a fine ball which the Ards forwards were unable to reach.
Just when it looked that Ards would hold out for the victory, disaster struck 10 minutes from the end, from a right wing corner the Glenavon defender was left unmarked to power home at the back post. This setback seemed to spurn the Ards boys forward in search of the winner. Entering the last 5 minutes, Bell played a ball down the line for the ever alert Hanna who produced a wonderful turn and ball to feed Patmore on the right wing who beat his full back and drilled in a magificent ball which the Glenavon defender drilled home under pressure from two Ards forwards. Ards not content with a one goal continued to pour forward and Patmore produced a wonderful effort for 25 yards which was brilliantly saved by the Glenavon goalkeeper. Fittingly Ards ended the game on the attack and this was a great end to a wonderful season for the boys.
This was a wonderful performance for the Ards team who produced one of the their best performances of the season in a game that mattered and although there were a number of candidiates for the Man of the Match award. The match officials chose Martin Mawhinney who fully deserved the accolade.
Team: Andrew Wallace; Gary Cunningham; Kurtis Bell; Scott Neville; Gary Carberry; Zac Fletcher; Steven Gordon; Martin Mawhinney; Chris Cochrane; Rory Mullen; Kurtis Hanna
